NEW ORLEANS – The first countable weekend in NCAA Division I Cross Country brought some changes to the Regional Team Rankings in both the men’s and women’s poll, as released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). While there was no movement at the top, there was a litany of swapped spots throughout the heart of each survey.

Starting on the men’s side, the only region that remained untouched was that of the Mid-Atlantic Region. No. 1 Villanova still sits on top with the remaining 14 teams – from No. 2 Georgetown to No. 15 Temple – all in the same order.

As expected, however, the Mountain Region underwent some renovations following the announcement thatNorthern Arizona would redshirt Futsum Zienasellassie (third-place finisher at NCAAs last year) andNathan Weitz. The Lumberjacks fell from No. 2 to No. 6, while BYU (No. 3 to No. 2) and New Mexico (No. 4 to No. 3) shifted up one spot and Southern Utah (No. 6 to No. 4) climbed two spots after another strong showing at the Roy Griak Invitational.

There were a few teams, like the Thunderbirds, who trended quite a bit upward after the weekend’s meets.Missouri surged seven spots in the Midwest Region (No. 14 to No. 7), Liberty went up six spots in the Southeast Region (No. 15 to No. 9) and Georgia went from No. 6 to No. 2 in the South Region.

And just like the men’s side, the only non-changed region on the women’s side is the Mid-Atlantic Region. No. 1 Georgetown, fresh off a third-place finish at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, is followed in order by every team from last week.

The Southeast Region looks different with 10 teams taking up residence in a new spot. The biggest movers and shakers in that region were Clemson (No. 10 to No. 5), Appalachian State (No. 8 to No. 6) and Coastal Carolina (No. 11 to No. 7). Eastern Kentucky and Kentucky both fell more than five spots.

Six teams from the Ivy League are in the top-10 of the Northeast Region, including five in a row from No. 3 to No. 7 (CornellHarvardDartmouthColumbia and Brown). Both Cornell and Harvard went up more than two spots from the previous week.

In total, there are six new additions to the Regional Team Rankings – six men’s teams and five women’s teams. The new men’s teams are Houston BaptistSam Houston StateUMass Lowell (second-ever appearance), Kansas State (first-ever appearance), San Francisco and Long Beach State. The new women’s teams are LSUMcNeese StateAlbanyKansas State and Sacramento State.

NCAA Division I Regional Championships will be held around the country on Friday, November 13 with the national meet occurring eight days later in Louisville, Kentucky.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams’ strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
